Dillon Maples Video and Scouting Report

Dillon Maples has been somewhat of an enigma since signing with the Cubs for $2.5 million in the 2011 draft. His age and injuries prevented him from throwing but a handful of innings in 2011 and 2012, and yet he was ranked amongst the top ten prospects in the Cubs system by both John Sickels and Jason Parks based on his enormous upside. Cubs fans have been waiting for a glimpse of him for years, … Continue reading

A Well-Deserved Promotion for Pierce Johnson (Scouting Report + Video)

Pierce Johnson will make his first start for the High-A Daytona Cubs Monday after a well-deserved promotion. Johnson was tearing through Midwest League lineups with a lively 91-93 mph fastball and a power curveball that most hitters at the level couldn’t touch. In 69 2/3 MWL innings, Johnson posted a 3.10 ERA while striking out 25% of batters faced and only walking 7.4%. If you toss out his disastrous first outing, his ERA was a … Continue reading

Michael Heesch Scouting Report and Video

Early in April, John Arguello of Cubs Den starting talking about an unheralded Kane County pitcher by the name of Michael Heesch. I must admit that I could not recall hearing that name before John had mentioned him, but the surprising reports had me actively seeking out starts of his in the box scores. As far as I could tell, Heesch had fairly mediocre stuff given his age, but decided there had to be more … Continue reading

An Early Review of Pierce Johnson

I have seen Pierce Johnson twice now, once on Kane County’s Opening Day and this past Tuesday against the Clinton Lumberkings, and I have seen two different pitchers each time. He has thrown 7 1/3 innings thus far, surrendering seven earned runs on 7 hits and three walks while striking out eight, though you could easily argue that a lot of the runs he’s surrendered have been a product of poor defense behind him. On … Continue reading

4/9 Clinton Lumberkings at Kane County Recap

It was a cold and rainy morning when I set out for 5/3 Ballpark today, but I was pleasantly surprised by the nice weather when I got to the stadium. The, uh, extreme availability of seats today allowed me to sit behind the plate and behind the 3 scouts who showed up to watch Pierce Johnson pitch. It was a good game, and the Cougars won it on a Jeimer Candelario line-drive in the bottom … Continue reading

4/6 Quad Cities @ Kane County Recap

The Kane County Cougars fought hard to get back into the game after a horrendous outing from Jose Arias, but ultimately fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits 13-10. The Kane County Cougars were eventually swept in the series, but it’s early in the year and it’s Low-A, so there’s nothing to get too upset about. Three Good Things I Saw Rock Shoulders. I touched on him in my last recap, but Shoulders had another … Continue reading

Kane County Opening Day Recap

I got to see the Kane County Cougars get drubbed by a talented Quad Cities team tonight, 7-2. It’s been too long since I’ve seen live baseball and I was very happy to get to see a couple of the game’s very best prospects on display. The game got pretty uneventful fast, as the game was out of hand after the second inning, but I stayed the full 9 innings. I won’t be publishing video … Continue reading
